The body uses niacin in the process of releasing energy from carbohydrates, to form fat from carbohydrates, and to metabolize alcohol. Niacin comes in two basic forms: niacin (also called nicotinic acid) and niacinamide (also called nicotinamide). High levels of niacin — usually several grams per day — lower cholesterol, triglyceride, and triacylglycerol levels and raise HDL cholesterol levels. The niacinamide form, commonly found in multivitamin preparations, does not decrease elevated cholesterol.
