EFFECTS OF PARATHYROID HORMONE ON CALCIUM HOMEOSTASIS

Parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is secreted in response to a decrease in the plasma ionised calcium level, influences calcium homeostasis by: (a) directly effecting calcium and phosphate reabsorption by the kidney, (b) influencing bone mineralisation and calcium flux from bone, and (c) stimulating 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (1,25- DHCC) synthesis by the kidney.
