IMPORTANT ROLE OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS

Vitamins and minerals are essential to life. As described in my previous post, several of the vitamins as well as minerals are needed for the reaction sequences of intermediary metabolism. Niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, pyridoxine, and pantothenic acid (as part of the CoA molecule) all serve as coenzymes in these reactions particularly in energy metabolism.
Ascorbic acid, vitamin E, and selenium function in the free radical suppression system and help to neutralise the effects stress. Magnesium, manganese, and other divalent ions serve as cofactors in a variety of reactions. Iron and copper function in the cytochromes and haemoglobin, both of which are essential to the use of oxygen. In the former, oxygen is used to make water by the respiratory chain, and in the latter, oxygen is transported to the cells for exchange for carbon dioxide. The synthesis of the purines and pyrmidines, components of DNA and RNA likewise demand that adequate micronutrients be present for this synthesis.
